As you prepare to fire up the grill this summer, there’s no better time to stock up on plenty of clean-burning propane gas. While this convenient fuel stores safely and stably, there are still a few rules to follow to avoid unnecessary risks. Here are several safety tips you should know.
Do:
Store tanks outdoors.
Propane gas is highly flammable and must therefore be stored outdoors at all times. Damp conditions in sheds, garages, and basements can cause tanks to corrode and develop leaks. A small flame or spark could ignite the leaking gas and place those nearby at risk of harm. A back porch, carport, or other shaded, open area is the safest place for storage.
Store tanks upright.
Propane tanks must be stored in an upright position to prevent damage to the release valve and leaks. Choose a level surface such as concrete or a wooden pallet to ensure the tank stays upright, or use a milk crate or similar item to keep it level.
Alternatively, purpose-built holders are available at many hardware stores, or you can put your tank on cinder blocks as long as you leave the handle and valve exposed.
Don’t:
Store in sunlight.
Extended exposure to sunlight can increase the temperature of your tank to more than the safe upper limit of 120 °F. When propane gas heats up, it expands, thus increasing pressure within the tank.
Fortunately, tanks are usually equipped with pressure release valves to vent off pressurized gas. However, keeping a tank in direct sunlight will cause your tank to drain off gas to prevent an explosion, thus depleting your supply.
Store near flammable materials.
Always store tanks at least 10 feet away from each other and from flammable materials such as automotive fuels, harsh chemicals, and paper and wood products. Also, keep them away from open flames and electrical devices. That way, if one tank happens to ignite, the others are at a safe distance.
