Propane gas is one of the most popular fuels on the market. It’s a clean-burning, low-carbon form of liquid petroleum that’s used in everything from heating up homes and businesses to powering backup propane generators and running a variety of tools and vehicles. Despite being such a widely used gas across the country, many people don’t understand that there are different grades of propane. Knowing the differences is beneficial in deciding which is best for your needs.
What Are the Differences Between Grades of Propane Gas?
1. HD5 Propane
Known as the consumer-grade propane, HD5 propane gas is made up of 90% propane, 5% propylene, and a 5% mixture of gases like butane and methane. It’s the highest quality available and the only one that’s recommended for use with vehicles such as forklifts, buses, and certain taxis that have propane tanks. It’s both cost-effective and one of the most clean-burning fuels, so it’s no surprise that it’s so widely popular.
2. HD10 Propane
This form is the accepted standard in California because the state doesn’t have access to the pipelines that carry HD5. It has the same makeup as HD5 with one exception: It permits 10% propylene within the propane/propylene mixture.
This one difference causes components in engines to stick during operation, which is why it’s not recommended for vehicle use. Otherwise, HD10 is perfectly suited for use in propane-powered appliances like a furnace or water heater.
3. Commercial Propane
This grade is often used interchangeably with HD10 because they both fall below the quality of HD5. However, commercial propane and HD10 propane often have different specifications for gas and propylene content, and commercial grade only has to have enough propane to hold a flame. That’s why it produces a variety of different flame colors unlike the true blue of HD5. Its most common usage is for chemical processing in a number of industries.
