If you’re adding a new septic system to your property, it’s possible you’ll be offered two options: traditional and ATU (alternative treatment unit). Each has a different approach to waste treatment as well as unique advantages. Understanding what makes a conventional and ATU system different will help you determine which is ideal for your needs and land type.

Traditional vs. ATU Septic Systems

Traditional

Traditional septic systems are buried on-site and use countless healthy bacteria to treat waste flushed from a home system. They function by using gravity to eject treated wastewater into the drain field on your property. Two parts handle this role: the distribution network, which flushes treated water, and the compartment tank where waste is treated.

septic systemConventional tanks remain the most cost-effective option, generally costing between $4,500 to $6,000 depending on the home size, tank size, and work required for installation. Compared with an ATU system, traditional tanks are easier to maintain. Not all properties accommodate them, however. For the gravity system to function correctly, tanks need to be buried in soil with a lower water table.

ATU

An ATU system is also buried on-site and is an alternative to a municipal sewer connection. It’s especially convenient in rural areas. It functions by first using oxygen or a similar medium to decompose organic waste in the tank. For further decomposition, an aeration chamber is used to break down solids and blend them with oxygen. They can then be safely ejected into the drain field.

The average ATU septic system costs between $11,000 to $12,000 and requires more maintenance. It has a lower environmental impact on sensitive soil types, however, and can be buried in clay, shallow soil, rocky soils, and other areas that traditional tanks can’t. Treatment is performed more quickly and with even less risk of contaminated groundwater.
