When the sun’s shining and school’s out, there are tons of activities to keep kids busy on the asphalt driveway right at home. With a few simple items like chalk, a length of rope, or a ball, your little ones can have hours of fun while getting plenty of exercise and fresh air. Here are some ideas for their next outdoor adventure time.

Children’s Activities Perfect for the Driveway

1. Hopscotch

A classic for hundreds of years, the rules for this game are simple, requiring just a bit of space on the pavement and a piece of chalk. Just draw out a course with 10 numbered spaces and use small objects or chalk marks to keep score. This game is great for agility, requiring kids to be light on their feet to get the high score.

2. Jump Rope

With just a piece of rope, kids can boost their coordination and their brainpower by matching the rhythm of their skips with a simple rhyme. Variations include single jumping, pairs, and the more advanced Double Dutch, in which two kids turn ropes while a third jumps them.

3. Avoid the Shark

Use different colors of chalk to draw “beaches” at varying distances, then draw shark fins between them. Kids will have to rely on their ability to hop and dodge across distances to avoid falling in with the sharks.

4. Chalk Art

asphaltGive your kids a bucket of multicolored sidewalk chalk and let them choose an open patch of pavement for this terrific way to open up their creativity. Options include self-portraits, tracing, landscape drawings, and anything else they can dream up.

5. Sidewalk Twister

Bring this classic flexibility game into the sunlight with chalk, paper squares, or multicolored rope. Mark out the spaces, call out the commands, and mix it up by asking them to do any number of silly things to win.

6. Four Square

A classic in many playgrounds, four square uses a simple grid in which kids stand in squares numbered 1-4. Starting with player 4, the ball is bounced once in their own square before being bounced to any other player. Each recipient must then bounce it in their own square once before passing it along. If a square is missed or if the ball lands a second time, the player in possession is out, until all but the winner remains. This is a great game for developing hand-eye coordination.
