Whether you own a brand-new or refurbished MacBook®you can usually look forward to a seamless experience. Unfortunately, no piece of technology is perfect forever. When problems do occur, knowing how to address them can save you a lot of time and anxiety. Here are a few issues you might run into with your laptop and what you can do about them.

How to Troubleshoot Common MacBook Problems

1. Unresponsive Apps

If an app freezes, you may not be able to close out of it using the normal methods. In this case, you must force-quit to close the app and start it again. To access the force quit menu, press Command, Option, and Escape at the same time. Next, highlight the offending app and click Force Quit to close out of it. If multiple apps are giving you problems, select them while holding down the command or shift keys to force-quit them all at once.

2. Power Adapter Issues

Power adapters can go bad over time, which means you’ll need to find a replacement to properly charge your battery. However, you must first determine whether the problem is the power adapter or the MacBook itself.

Use another power adapter and see if it’s capable of charging the battery. If so, the problem is solved, and you can purchase another adapter. If not, there could be an issue with the battery itself or the left I/O board, which is responsible for the function of the laptop's ports. In this case, it’s time for professional service.

3. Blank Screen at Startup

If you're getting a blank screen on startup, boot the MacBook in safe mode. Safe mode starts your Mac with only the necessary software so that it can be checked for directory issues. On startup, hold the select key down until you reach the login screen. Diagnostic checks will begin immediately, and repairs will be made to prevent the issue from happening again.
