Like the Apple® Mac® line of desktop and laptop computers, the iPhone offers far more than the basics when it comes to performance. With a little know-how, the iPhone camera can deliver professional-quality images that rival your DSLR. To get started, use these three simple tips for taking better photos with your smartphone.

How to Take Great Pictures With an iPhone®

1. Capture Photos While Recording

While candid moments can be challenging to capture, they often make the best photos. One of the iPhone's lesser-known functions is the ability to capture images while recording video.

To use this feature, press the small white circle to the left of the red record button while you're filming. This allows you to take images while recording without having to stop the video. Once you've finished recording, you'll have a video as well as still shots of your favorite moments.

2. Turn Off the Flash

Apple Mac

Even more so than Apple Mac computers, the iPhone is known for its high-quality camera. While the flash is a staple on smartphones, it's not particularly useful when taking pictures. The iPhone's flash emits an LED light that can wash out your photographs or leave them with an unnatural hue.

When possible, use natural light sources for your photos that add depth and richness. For newer iPhone models, use night mode when shooting in low light. If yours is older, use the camera's exposure slider to enhance the lighting without diminishing your photo quality.

3. Use Portrait Mode

iPhone 7® and later models support portrait mode, which uses depth-sensing technology to detect a subject's edges while softening the background. Similar to a high-quality DSLR, this feature enhances the image focus and creates a depth-of-field effect.

Toggle through shooting modes in your camera app to find portrait mode next to the standard Photo setting. The newest models provide additional features for shooting people, inanimate objects, and pets. iPhone XS® and later will allow you to adjust the intensity of the focus, further enhancing the subject and softening the background.
