Some MacBook® users occasionally encounter trouble with their keyboards. In most cases, the keys either won't produce type when pressed, or they repeat type when pressed only once. These issues can make working a challenge, so if they occur regularly, computer repairs should be a priority. Here's a look at the most common causes of a malfunctioning MacBook keyboard to help you determine whether to take it to the shop.

What Issues Can Affect a MacBook Keyboard?

1. Something Under the Key

The keys on many Apple® products are surprisingly sensitive. On certain MacBook models released since 2015, there have been widely reported problems with the butterfly mechanisms located under individual keys. If something tiny, even if it's just a speck of dirt or dust, gets lodged under the key, it prevents the butterfly mechanism from distributing weight evenly throughout the key.

As a result, the key won't produce text because it's not depressing fully. Since you can't replace individual MacBook keys, take your device in for computer repairs and have them replace the keyboard.

2. New Change in Software or Settings

In some cases, a nonworking keyboard can be caused by recent changes to your MacBook's software or settings—changes you might not even be aware of. Fortunately, you can often restore the device to its previous state of operation if a couple of keys are still operational.

First, restart the device; while it's rebooting, open the Recovery Tool by pressing ⌘ + R. Next, choose Restore from the Time Machine backup and follow the on-screen instructions. If this doesn't work, contact a computer repair professional.

3. Built-In Delay

If the Caps Lock or Media Eject keys aren't responding as quickly as you'd like, there's likely nothing wrong with your MacBook. These two keys have a built-in delay to prevent an instant response in case a user presses them by mistake.

You'll know the Caps Lock is working when the light comes on, and you'll know the Media Eject is responding when the corresponding icon appears on the screen. If these keys don't respond after holding them down for a couple of seconds, there may be a more complex issue that requires professional computer repairs.
