Spiders are among the most common indoor pests. They typically hide in dark and undisturbed areas, such as closets and attics. Though some are harmless to humans, brown recluses and black widows may leave painful bites that can have potentially serious complications if left untreated. Below, you'll learn more about spider bites and how pest control professionals recommend treating and preventing them.

Symptoms of Spider Bites

Brown recluses are typically about three-fourths of an inch long with bodies that range from tan to dark brown. One of their most distinguishing features is a violin-shaped mark on their abdomens. When these arachnids bite, they usually cause mild pain that gradually becomes more intense. You might also notice an ulcerated sore with red, blue, or purple coloration around it

Black widows range from three to 10 millimeters in length and have solid black bodies with a red hourglass-like marking on the abdomen. When bitten, you might notice minor swelling and redness in the affected area, followed by more severe pain and stiffness. In some cases, you may experience cramps and abdominal pain, along with fever, chills, and nausea.

Treatment

If a brown recluse or black widow bites you, seek emergency medical care. Take prescription medication as directed by your doctor, and treat any itching and pain with antihistamines and ibuprofen. Clean the wound daily with soap and water, and apply antibiotic ointment to the site. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain.

Prevention

The best way to prevent bites is by keeping arachnids out of your home. Spiders tend to enter through small openings around doors, windows, and vents. Seal gaps and cracks leading to the exterior of your property with caulk or weatherstripping to block off entry points. Keep landscaping near your property neatly groomed and trees trimmed to prevent overgrown foliage from acting as "bridges" into your home. Clean and organize closets, cabinets, and attics periodically to deter dangerous spiders from building webs in these areas.
