People wear eyeglasses for many reasons, but refractive errors in the eye are some of the most common causes. Refractive errors refer to conditions where the eye shape does not allow light to bend correctly from the cornea to the inner lens. The result is blurred vision of varying degrees. Here's a closer look at the different categories of errors.

What Are the Types of Refractive Errors?

1. Myopia

Myopia is a type of nearsightedness that affects about 25% of Americans. Those with this condition can see close images fine, but faraway objects look blurry. It's an inherited focusing disorder, not an eye disease.

The condition can be mild, which is called low myopia, or severe, which is categorized as high myopia. The latter usually occurs between ages 20 to 30, but eyeglasses can correct the problem.

2. Hyperopia

Farsightedness is also known as hyperopia. The vision condition allows people to see faraway objects with near-perfect clarity, but items become blurred up close.

Hyperopia is usually present at birth and is hereditary, like myopia. People with hyperopia often experience eyestrain or aching around the eyes and may need to squint to see unless they have eyeglasses.

3. Astigmatism

With astigmatism, the shape or curve of the cornea or lens is imperfect. The cornea and lens usually have a smooth and even curvature to allow light to focus sharply into the retina at the back of the eye.

It's possible to have astigmatism with other refractive errors like myopia and hyperopia. Symptoms of this condition include eye discomfort, headaches, and eyestrain.

4. Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a degenerative condition where people eventually lose the ability to focus on close-up objects. It's attributed to the natural aging process, and while most people notice the vision change around their mid-40's, it will continue to worsen until around age 65.

Most people notice they have presbyopia when they realize they have to bring books and papers closer to their eyes to read. Basic eye exams can diagnose someone with presbyopia, and it's possible to address the condition with eyewear or corrective eye surgery.
