Braces can discourage you from flossing since the metal wires hinder the ability to slide the floss in between each tooth. However, forgoing flossing, especially with braces, can lead to a buildup of more plaque and bacteria in your mouth, but there are ways that you can floss with ease. Choose which of the following methods works for you and then follow the corresponding tips to alleviate your flossing process.

How to Floss With Braces

1. Floss Threaders

Floss threaders can help ease and expedite your flossing experience. After attaching a regular piece of floss into the threader’s loop, you can pull it through the small gap between each tooth more easily. You will have better leverage when sliding the floss through each space. The threader is a little thicker than normal floss, which gives you a better grip and your teeth a more thorough cleaning.

2. Regular Floss

You can still clean your teeth thoroughly with regular floss, thanks to a couple of helpful techniques. First, look for waxed floss as it will help navigate a smooth transition into and out of the metal of your braces. It is also more resilient and less prone to fray or break when caught. Tear off a long piece of floss, about 12 to 18 inches long, and thread it through above the wire. Once the string is through the metal, you can push the floss between your teeth and slide it back and forth to dislodge any trapped food or bacteria.

3. Water Flossers

You may also benefit from a water flosser, or an oral irrigator. While these tools can sometimes cost more than other methods, they greatly aid in removing and preventing food, plaque, and bacteria from building up. The gentle jet of water can fit between the spaces of your teeth and metal wires. Just aim the stream between each tooth, and the water flosser will work to keep your teeth and braces clean without hurting your gums.

If you have sensitive or inflamed gums, the water flosser is a valuable resource. It is also potentially one of the easiest flossing options to use and can help encourage you to keep flossing despite pain, tightness, or soreness from your braces.
