Drivers who shift gears manually have a special bond with their vehicles due to the more intimate operation. However, an issue can still slip past your radar, and the clutch is a common part that wears out subtly at first. Fortunately, there are signs that can alert you to the need for clutch replacement. Here's what to be aware of as you drive.

4 Signs of a Failing Clutch

1. Slipping or Grinding Gears

In most vehicles, the clutch should be checked every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. This is a wide range, and one of the first signs that service should be scheduled is when the gears don't shift smoothly. Slipping occurs when the clutch fails to engage, meaning inadequate power is supplied to the wheels.

Gears can grind as well. This is sometimes due to driver error, such as pressing the pedal too hard or failing to shift smoothly, but when a clutch replacement is needed, the part will often fail to completely disengage from the engine while the gears are still rotating.

2. Pedal Issues

A "soft" or loose clutch pedal that depresses too easily doesn't inspire confidence while driving. This is with good reason, as the clutch plate is likely worn. A component in the clutch assembly may also be at fault.

Conversely, the pedal may feel "sticky," requiring more effort to engage it. It may even remain depressed for too long, holding the clutch open and making driving dangerous.

3. Burning Smell

When gears are grinding or slipping, there's often friction between metal parts. This can result in an unpleasant burning odor. If you detect a distinct smell of metal against metal, seek the help of a clutch replacement professional as soon as possible to prevent more extensive transmission damage.

4. Weak Acceleration

If your engine is revving without the acceleration you're used to, it could mean clogged fuel injectors or inadequate pressure. However, if it seems to correspond with shifting gears, the clutch disc may not be engaging the transmission with the engine properly. The solution could range from a transmission flush to replacing the disc.
