The construction industry relies on steel in all its forms. Steel is a durable material, but needs to be stored in such a way that it won't become distorted or corrode as it will do if not done correctly. If you are on a construction site, you may need on-site storage solutions for the steel you will be working with. From rebar to Wide Flange Beams, here is a guide on how to store steel on-site.

Storing Galvanized Rebars

To prevent stains on the surface of galvanized rebar, keep it away from wood or coated steel. You can store them on any non-metallic surface except the aforementioned wood.

Storing Steel Reinforcement

rebar

To minimize confusion and waste, divide up different sizes, label them or paint the ends to differentiate and store them separately. Coat steel reinforcement with cement wash before stacking to prevent rusting or scaling. If you are storing it for a long period, stack it above ground by at least 6 inches.

Storing Epoxy-Coated Rebars

When transporting epoxy-coated rebar, do not use chains or bare cables but synthetic slings and do not drag them. Use foam between the bars to protect the coating. Use spreader bars or strong backs to avoid any sagging that may occur.

Storing Structural Steel

You will also want to store structural steel at least 6 inches off the ground on platforms, skids or supports. Store different classes, sizes and lengths separate from each other. In the case of long-term storage, or if the site is in a coastal or humid area, you will want to apply a protective coating as well so that the steel won't corrode.
