There are several restorative dentistry options that contribute to healthy grins, including dental crowns. Also known as dental caps, crowns are tooth-shaped prosthetics that fit over existing teeth. Learn more about crowns here, including the numerous benefits they provide.

What to Know About Dental Crowns

Applications

Crowns are available in several materials, including metal, porcelain-to-metal, and all-resin, ceramic, and porcelain. They are used to cover dental implants, or faux tooth roots that replace missing teeth following extractions. They are also used to protect a tooth weakened by decay or injury, as crowns keep teeth from experiencing further wear or fractures. Crowns provide support for dental bridges, or permanent prosthetics that replace missing teeth, and cover severely discolored, misshapen, or worn teeth. If a tooth requires extra support following a root canal, a dental crown is used.

Procedure

To prepare a tooth for a crown, the dentist takes x-rays to determine if decay or injured tooth pulp is present. If there is an injury or decay, the tooth needs the appropriate treatment before receiving the crown, such as a root canal or filling, respectively. Next, the dentist files the tooth down so there is room for the crown to fit comfortably minus bite issues. The dental professional uses a special paste or putty to create an impression of the tooth before filing it, which ensures a natural result.

Benefits

Dental crowns save damaged or decayed teeth from extraction, and look and function like the real thing. They last up to 15 years and protect your teeth from decay, though brushing and flossing are still necessary to prevent gingivitis and gum disease. Healthy gum tissue provides a foundation for teeth. When used in conjunction with dental bridges, crowns contribute to brilliant, beautiful smiles.
