You may need a dental crown if you have suffered a chip or fracture or have recently had root canal therapy. In order for this cosmetic treatment to last, it must be properly cared for. Keep in mind the following dentist-approved rules to get lasting use from the crown.

Ways to Care for a Dental Crown

1. Brush & Floss

There is no such thing as an invincible dental crown. You should brush and floss around them because bacteria can still grow there and acids can wear them down. It is possible for plaque to build up at the gumline and eventually penetrate below the gumline, resulting in gingivitis and then gum disease. Floss between adjacent teeth and brush all surfaces of the dental crown.

2. Avoid Harmful Foods

There are certain foods that can break or loosen dental crowns. You should avoid chewing gum, caramel, taffy, sticky candies, popcorn or foods with hard seeds, and raw vegetables. In addition, chewing ice can be problematic. You should instead steam vegetables and soften food that poses a risk.

3. Don't Use Your Teeth as a Tool

You shouldn't treat your dental crown as a tool. Do not use it to open bottles, plastic food bags, containers, or other items. It may be damaged or pulled loose as a result. Furthermore, you may damage nearby teeth and need additional crowns as a result.
