Seeing the local dentist for regular teeth cleanings is one of the keys to dental health, especially if you have braces. Food particles and bacteria can get stuck among the metal components, contributing to tooth decay and gum disease. In addition to visiting the dentist regularly, you need to clean your teeth twice a day and floss once daily. To help you do this with braces, review the following tips.
How to Clean Your Teeth if You Wear Braces
1. Consider Switching to an Electric Toothbrush
An electric toothbrush makes it easier to clean each tooth, which some braces-wearers find appealing. If you do not want to purchase an electric toothbrush, use soft “regular” toothbrushes. Medium and hard bristles are too harsh and can wear on enamel. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to clean along the gumline, then use an upward sweeping motion to clean your teeth. Take care to gently brush around each bracket to get the most plaque and bacteria, and always brush after eating to remove food particles.
2. Floss With a Water Pick
Water picks and similar oral irrigators make flossing simple if you wear braces, unlike traditional floss that can get stuck among the metal pieces. Oral irrigators use water to clean along the gumline, which dislodges food particles and bacteria. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after brushing and flossing to ensure all food particles have been eliminated.
3. Avoid Using Too Much Toothpaste
Using an excessive amount of toothpaste creates serious foam that can interfere with teeth cleaning. You might not be able to see assorted debris, such as food particles, or you could accidentally brush your brackets too hard. Your toothpaste should cover less than half of your brush head, not the whole brush head, to avoid these issues. If you feel your mouth is too foamy at any point, spit out some of the paste before continuing.
