There are many different treatments that dentists can use to improve the appearance and condition of your teeth. Among them are dental crowns, fillings, and bridges. All of these offer distinct advantages, but they also differ from one another greatly. Here’s what you should know about each one.

Crowns

A dental crown is a cosmetic solution that can improve the appearance of a tooth damaged by decay, grinding, discoloration, or trauma. In these cases, your dentist may not need to remove the tooth. Instead, they’ll simply place a cap, or “crown,” over the affected tooth and bond it so it remains in place. This restorative treatment improves the look and integrity of the tooth, and is usually made with a material like porcelain, ceramic, or acrylic to look as natural as possible.

Implants

If you’re missing a tooth, you may want to consider an implant. This titanium screw is designed to replicate the function of your natural tooth root. Once installed, your provider will then affix a crown on top to create a fully functioning tooth and root system. You’re a good candidate for this option if your missing teeth affect your confidence, or if they’re contributing to other potential dental health issues like bite difficulties or gum disease.

Bridges

A dental bridge is used to fill the gap caused by missing teeth. Bridges consist of false teeth that are supported on each side by crowns. The crowns are simply set on the teeth on each side of the gap, behaving as supporters for the bridge. Your dentist can replace either one missing tooth or three teeth in a single row.
