Knocking out a permanent tooth is one of the most common dental emergencies. Teeth that have been knocked out are called “avulsed,” and dentists can save them — if you act quickly. Aside from visiting a dentist immediately, there are a few steps you need to take to facilitate re-implantation. Here, Ronald L. Rasmussen, DDS explains the process.

How to Save an Avulsed Tooth

1. Rinse the Tooth

Pick up the tooth carefully — avoid touching the root, as it is easy to damage — and rinse it with milk. If you do not have any milk nearby, water will work. The main goal is to rinse the tooth of any debris and prevent it from drying so you can slide it back into place.

2. Keep the Tooth Moist

Once you have rinsed the tooth adequately, try slipping it gently back into the socket. If you cannot get it to stay in place without forcing it in, keep the tooth moist until you can make it to a dentist. Store it in your cheek or drop it into a small glass of milk, saliva, or water.

3. Visit an Emergency Dentist

Then you simply need a minor root canal procedure to remove any damaged tissue. For the re-implantation to work, though, you must act quickly. For best results, seek care within a couple of hours of losing the tooth.
