Proper dental care practices, such as brushing twice per day, are crucial for maintaining your oral hygiene. Your brushing technique and habits can make a significant difference when it comes to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Here’s some advice to help you maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.

Do:

Brush for two minutes.

Each time you brush, do so for two full minutes. Make sure you cover all tooth surfaces, including the insides and outsides, on both the upper and lower sections.

Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to maximize contact with the teeth. Use gentle, circular motions to effectively remove plaque.

Swap out your brush regularly.

Replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months. With repeated brushing, the bristles begin to splay and soften, preventing them from thoroughly cleaning bacteria and plaque off the teeth. Save money and prevent waste by using an electric toothbrush with replaceable heads.

Don’t:

Brush right after you eat.

Food and beverage residues contain acids that weaken the tooth enamel for about 30 minutes after eating and drinking. Wait at least half an hour to brush your teeth so that you don’t scrape away the enamel. If you need to freshen your mouth while waiting, chew sugar-free gum to produce saliva that will naturally wash away bacteria.

Neglect professional cleanings.

See your dental care provider twice per year for professional teeth cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, preventing the need for fillings.
