A Brief History of the Bow and Arrow
The origins of using a bow and arrow begin as far back as 10,000 BC, when the Egyptians used archery in hunting and warfare. Although modern equipment is made with different materials from ancient times, the basic sport is the same. Read more to see how archery developed over the centuries.
Archery in Different Cultures
While the earliest evidence of archery is in Egypt and neighboring countries, the use of a bow and arrow for warfare and hunting was also used in China from 1766 BC. Archers operated from a chariot, along with a driver and lancer. From China, archery spread to Japan, where it was incorporated into the martial art of Kyujutsu (now Kyudo).
Greek and Roman archery was oriented to hunting and sport, rather than war, and Middle Eastern cultures were skilled at using a bow and arrow on horseback. The Middle Eastern bows were powerful and could shoot an arrow up to 900 yards.
Archery in Legend & Sport
Use of the bow and arrow features in the myths and literature of many cultures, with popular heroes such as Britain’s Robin Hood being a romantic and impressive archer. Archers figure in the ancient artwork of Egypt, Greece, and the Middle East, and the literature of Greece, France, and Britain.
The first documented archery competitions took place in England in the 1500s, although it’s likely that competition is as old as the sport itself. Archery became archaic after the invention of firearms and disappeared from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East as a tool of war by the 1600s. It has continued as a popular sport around the world for children and adults.
