Combustion Cycle

Vehicle engines generate power by way of a four-stroke combustion cycle. During the intake, the crankshaft spins and pulls the piston down into the cylinder. This causes the inlet valve to open, letting fuel and air into the cylinder. Compression occurs next; this is when the inlet valve closes and squeezes the fuel and air, increasing their flammability. The spark plug fires as soon as the piston gets to the top of the cylinder. Then, the spark ignites the fuel and air, causing the fuel to burn. Hot gas fumes move the piston back down, and the energy produced by the burning fuel provides power to the crankshaft. Finally, the outlet valve opens as the piston moves back up the cylinder, moving exhaust out of the pipe. This four-step process repeats and continues for as long as your vehicle is running.
