Automobile engine issues are some of the most disastrous problems your car can face. Auto repairs on the engine are often very costly, but they don’t have to be if you address these issues early. Below are some of the most common types of engine problems and what to do about them.

3 Engine Issues & Solutions

1. Worn Spark Plugs

Spark plug creates the spark that ignites the fuel mixture that causes the engine to run. However, when they’re old or gunky, the engine will not run properly. If your spark plugs are having trouble, you may have trouble accelerating or starting the vehicle. You may also hear the engine misfiring or notice that your fuel economy is suffering. Replace the spark plugs about every 30,000 miles to prevent these issues from occurring in your car.

2. Dirty Oil

auto repairEngine oil lubricates the moving components of an engine to reduce friction. It also helps dissipate heat. Unfortunately, it cannot do either of these efficiently if it is dirty, sticky, or exposed to moisture. When oil gets dirty and dysfunctional, the engine has to work harder than it should, putting it at risk of catastrophic failure. To prevent extensive auto repairs, change your engine oil every three months or every 3.000 to 5,000 miles. This is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to extend the life of your vehicle.

3. Coolant Leak

Along with engine oil, engine coolant keeps your engine from overheating and suffering unnecessary wear and tear. Tubes of coolant running through the engine collect heat, pull it out of the engine compartment, and dissipate it through the radiator. A leak in these tubes leaves your engine in danger of overheating and can lead to costly damage. Check coolant levels once a month and follow the guidelines for changing the fluid listed in your car's owner's manual.
