Your asphalt driveway has to put up with a lot. Engine oil leaks, leaves and debris, and even spilled paint can all leave stains and imperfections on the surface. It’s important to have a professional reseal your driveway every few years, but you also need to clean it on your own in between those services. Here’s how you can keep your paved surfaces in top shape for as long as possible.

How to Keep Your Asphalt Driveway Clean

1. Sweep & Rinse Regularly

Even if you don’t see any visible stains on your driveway, make sure to clean the surface at least a few times every season to prevent them from forming in the first place. Leaves, sticks, and organic matter can leave behind brown spots as they decompose. Use a broom to remove large pieces, and then lightly spray the area with a hose to get any smaller spots.

2. Power-Wash Big Messes

asphaltIf your driveway has caked-on mud or dirt from your vehicle’s tires or heavy lawn equipment, a simple hose might not be enough. Power-washing the driveway delivers much more water pressure, which can help break down those materials and get them off of the asphalt. Try to remove as much of the mess as possible with a broom or stiff brush beforehand, and then rely on the pressure washer for any stubborn material that’s left over.

3. Use Detergent for Oil Stains

Oil stains can be a bit trickier to remove since they don’t mix with water-based cleaners. Powdered laundry detergent and baking soda can both help water sink into these stains enough to remove them. When you notice a leak or spill on your driveway, dampen it and add the detergent or baking soda to the surface. Use a stiff bristled brush to mix up those materials and break down the stain before hosing down the surface thoroughly.
