Lawns need regular maintenance to stay in good shape, but cutting the grass around your fence can be a challenge. Weedwhackers can mark up the fence, and mowers that get too close may cause serious damage. Here are a few tips on how you can protect fences yourself or with help from a fencing company while keeping the grass neatly trimmed.

How Can You Safely Cut Grass Near a Fence?

1. Adjust the Weed Whacker

Regardless of your fence material, it could end up with unsightly lines, cuts, or dents due to the string on the weed whacker hitting it at high speeds. To minimize this risk, hold the weed whacker at an angle where the string isn't coming into contact with the fence. Move slowly so that you can maintain control of the device while cutting away plant growth.

2. Add Clearance to the Fence

Simplify your maintenance routine by ensuring that there are a few inches of clearance between the ground and the bottom of the fence. With this extra space, you should be able to easily maneuver your weed whacker or lawn mover underneath. A fencing company can add clearance when they install the fence, or they can alter the yard under an existing fixture to create a gap.

3. Create a Border

Eliminate the need for mowing near the fence by installing a border along the base of it. You can use pavers, cement blocks, stones, or other landscaping materials to create a decorative accent. Install a weed barrier beneath the border to prevent grass from growing in this area.

4. Install A Garden

If a border doesn't appeal to you, consider creating a garden along the fence line. Cover the area with a weed barrier and mulch to stave off grass and weed growth, and then plant your favorite flowers or bushes to beautify the yard. Keep any plants a few inches back from the edge of the flowerbed to keep them safe from the mower.
