If you own a central air system, it's probably one of the most used items in your home. It utilizes a sophisticated process to cool the air. However, when one part fails, it disrupts the whole process. Understanding how this unit works can help ensure you provide the necessary maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Here's what you should know about this appliance.

The Air Conditioning Process

Central air systems start by monitoring the temperature in your home with the thermostat. This device is the unit's main control panel, often mounted on the wall. If the sensor detects a drop below the programmed temperature, the system kicks on. A fan then draws warm air into the ductwork and activates the blower motor in the outdoor unit.

Inside the unit, the evaporator coil cools warm air before sending it back into your home. At the same time, it uses a substance called refrigerant to capture heat, which is then pumped into another component called a condenser and released outside. This process continues until the system reaches your target indoor temperature.

Maintenance Tips

You can keep your system running optimally with a few measures. Ensure you're changing your system's air filters, which capture debris drawn into the unit. When they clog, the device struggles to push air through. It then overworks, straining parts and wasting electricity, leading to higher bills. To ensure smooth airflow, keep all the air registers on your ductwork at least slightly open.

Outside, keep the area around the device clean. Trim vegetation back at least 3 feet around the central air unit so that foliage doesn't grow inside the grates and damage wiring and coils. A clear area around the system also ensures optimal airflow as it releases heat from your home. If you notice debris building up on the unit, spray it off with a hose. Substances like pollen and fine dirt can collect on the evaporator coil and reduce its ability to maintain a comfortable temperature.
