Spring in Alaska is a special time when the snow melts, the sun shines, and the wildlife returns and the daylight lasts for more than 14 hours. It's a time when visitors can experience the beauty of this great state in a unique way, whether they’re enjoying Alaskan seafood or visiting national parks. To make the most of your Alaskan adventure, here are five tips for visiting Alaska in the spring:

5 Tips for Visiting Alaska in the Spring

1. Dress in Layers

Springtime in Alaska can be unpredictable. Temperatures can fluctuate twenty degrees or more from day to night, and rain, hail and snow are possibilities. To be prepared, pack layers. Start with a base layer that will keep you warm and add a waterproof outer layer to protect against rain. Don't forget to bring a hat, gloves, and weatherproof boots to keep you warm and dry.

2. Hiking and Biking opportunities are many

Many paved, multi-use trails in and around Anchorage provide access for both walking and biking at the same time. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is one of the most popular. It connects to the Moose Loop that encompasses the City of Anchorage.

3. Get Your Cameras Ready for a Beautiful Drive

The Seward Highway, from Anchorage to Seward, is considered one of the most scenic highways in the U.S. There are several viewpoints along the way where you can capture the picturesque snow-capped Chugach Mountains reflecting on the water of the Turnagain Arm. For a view of the city from above, drive or take a tour to the Glen Alps/Flat Top parking lot and take the short hike up to overlook Anchorage and the Cook Inlet.

4. Plan for Wildlife Sightings

Spring is an excellent time to see the wildlife in Alaska. From bears and moose to eagles and Grey Whales, there is no shortage of amazing creatures to spot. To increase your chances of seeing them, plan your trip around areas where they are known to be active, like Kincaid Park in Anchorage or the Glen Alps Hiking trails.  Of course, if you want to guarantee a wildlife sighting, you can head to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, The Alaska Wildlife Sanctuary in Girdwood, and the Sealife Center in Seward. Take a guided tour or hike to get up close and personal with these majestic animals.

5. Savor Wild Alaskan Seafood

When in Alaska, it's a must to try the local seafood. Spring is a great time to indulge in Wild Alaskan seafood. From succulent wild Alaskan smoked salmon to delectable halibut and king crab, there are plenty of options to choose from.
