An ideal horse arena should provide a comfortable riding surface with good traction. Bulk sand is the best footing material for regular riding. However, there are multiple kinds available, none of which are solely designed for arena use. Therefore, consider the following factors to ensure you find the best option for your needs.

Particle Size

Horse arenas often utilize sand grains from 0.05 millimeters to two millimeters in diameter. Staying within this range will deliver sufficient performance support and minimize dust, although the latter is less of an issue in the case of indoor areas. Do not use anything larger than two millimeters, as this approaches the size of gravel or tiny rocks, either of which can damage a horse's hooves.

Particle Shape

The shape of the sand particles impacts how the grains fall together, which, in turn, affects how comfortable the surface is underfoot. You have three main options when it comes to shape. Rounded particles leave voids, which can be cushioning but can sometimes result in instability and reduced traction. Angular particles fit together tightly, but they can become easily compacted.

Perhaps the best option is subangular particles, which are angular particles with worn edges. They provide a void tighter than rounded particles but don't cling as close together as angular ones, producing solid traction without extreme compaction. While any of these shapes are suitable for a horse arena, be aware of the pros and cons of each before you make a bulk sand purchase.

Grading

Bulk sand should be graded to offer the most suitable riding surface. Without grading, the sand will remain in its natural state, which is typically quite loose and deep. Gap grading allows larger and smaller particle sizes to separate, with the heavier particles becoming packed at the base and the lighter ones on top. Good grading should contain a range of small to medium particles that provide firm, but not compacted, footing.
