When to Schedule Hearing Testing for Your Child

1. Don’t Imitate Noises

Younger children often mimic the noises they hear around them. This behavior is a part of developing speech and exploring the world. If your little one doesn’t show interest in imitation or only responds by babbling, it can be an early sign of hearing issues. An audiologist can perform an inner ear exam to look for signs of damage from an infection or other health problems. They’ll then help you explore solutions like hearing aids.

2. Can’t Follow or React to Sounds

Besides mimicking sounds, young children should attempt to follow them, too. It could be a parent getting home in the other room and calling for them or the family dog barking at the back door. At the very least, your child should turn their head in the direction the noise is coming from. They typically develop this skill when around 6 months of age.

Your little one should also react to loud sounds. A passing car, bang, or other background noise will grab most people’s attention. Hearing testing is warranted if you notice your child doesn’t respond to these sounds or only reacts when the volume is extremely loud. 

3. Have Trouble Concentrating

It’s difficult for a child to focus on what someone is saying when they can’t hear well. This problem could cause them to struggle with concentration while at school, leading to lower grades and disinterest in social situations.
