X-rays play a key role in dental care. These are one of the most effective tools dentists can use to help patients maintain good oral health. As such, they’ve become a routine part of preventive checkups. Here's a closer look at this important technology and how dentists use it.

What Are Dental X-Rays?

Dental X-rays, also called radiographs, are a type of diagnostic imaging that allows dentists to see structures within the mouth that aren’t easily visible during a standard examination. They’re a form of radiant energy, which is able to pass through the body and capture photos of the teeth as well as the surrounding bones and soft tissue.

There are two main types of X-rays that dentists use: intraoral and extraoral. These are categorized according to where the images are being taken from. Intraoral X-rays produce photos of the tooth structure and jawbone, while extraoral images help identify issues within the jaw and skull.

Why Are They Needed?

X-rays give dentists the opportunity to address potential concerns early on and diagnose a variety of problems that would otherwise go undetected. Images can reveal tooth decay, cracks or damage in dental work, bone loss, infection in the root of a tooth, and impacted teeth.

For younger patients, they help monitor proper oral development and confirm whether teeth are growing as they should. Dentists also use X-rays to come up with an appropriate plan for dental care treatments, such as dentures, braces, and implants.

How Often Should They Be Taken?

Generally, patients should receive dental X-rays every one to two years as a preventive measure against cavities and gum disease. However, there are several factors that will affect how often they’re recommended, including age, current dental health, and history of oral disease.

It might be necessary to have them taken more frequently if your dentist is tracking the progress of a specific problem or treatment. Smoking, dry mouth, drinking sugary beverages on a regular basis, and getting restorative work done may also increase the need for X-rays.
