Flu Season Do's & Don'ts
With flu season approaching yet again, there are many things you can do to protect yourself. Scheduling an influenza vaccine with your doctor is important, as is following flu etiquette recommendations and taking care of your health at home. Below are tips to keep in mind ahead of fall and winter.
Do:
Wash your hands thoroughly and often.
Cleansing your hands for at least 10 seconds with quality soap helps prevent the spread of cold and flu germs. Make a habit of washing your hands before every meal if you don’t already, after being in public, or any other time these important extremities feel unclean, such as after handling trash. If you don’t have immediate access to water and soap, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to kill germs.
Enjoy a healthy, nutrient-dense diet.
Maintaining a healthy diet provides your immune system with the nutrients it needs to stay strong and combat viruses. Some of the best foods include citrus fruits, red peppers, and tomatoes which are loaded with immune-boosting vitamin C, and antioxidant-rich blueberries that help treat and prevent colds. You’ll also want to drink plenty of water since the body loses fluids when ill. Water also helps loosen and flush out infectious mucus.
Don’t:
Go to work if you’re experiencing symptoms.
If you notice any flu symptoms, such as fatigue, body aches, a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and chills, stay home from work. Going to your office or other workplace risks spreading your germs and making others sick. Avoid coughing into your hands for the same reason, since infectious water droplets land on them and help spread the illness. Cough into the crux of your arm instead and go to the doctor if your symptoms do not get better after a few days.
Smoke cigarettes.
Using tobacco products does nothing for your health, especially when you are ill. Smoking cigarettes causes respiratory inflammation that can make your symptoms worse. This habit also compromises your immune system, which makes getting better quickly a challenge. If you smoke, consider healthy quitting options such as patches, gum, and lozenges.
