Early detection can save your life, which is why you should visit your OB-GYN at least once a year. Your doctor will take blood samples, perform a pap smear, and take other steps to assess your reproductive health. Once you reach a certain age, your doctor's visits will also include mammograms. Here are a few reasons why it's important to have the X-ray imaging done once a year.

Why Should You Schedule Annual Mammograms?

1. Reach the Age of 40

Doctors recommend women with an average risk of developing breast cancer start getting mammograms beginning at the age of 40. Women with a higher risk should speak to their OB-GYN about beginning mammograms at a younger age. To determine risk, a physician will consider a patient's family history, age, genetics, menstrual history, whether they've had radiation therapy, and breast density.

2. Stay on Top of Your Health

OB-GYN

During the appointment, you will be asked to place one bare breast at a time on the platform of a machine that is designed to look at breast tissue. The breast is pressed between the platform and a plastic paddle, then X-ray images are taken. Your OB-GYN will review the images to check for abnormalities that could be caused by breast cancer, fibroadenoma, cysts, fibrocystic breast disease, or other conditions.

3. Detect Early

During each appointment, an OB-GYN will assess your immediate risk and future risk of developing breast cancer and teach you how to perform self-exams at home to spot any changes immediately. When breast cancer is detected in the early stages, the chance of survival increases.
