Strange car sounds can be a warning sign to visit an auto shop for car repair. However, many owners neglect these noises believing it goes away after a while. Although some sounds can be less urgent, learning what noises can be a safety concern can save you from future troubles. Here are the most common car noises and what to do if you encounter them.

How to Recognize Different Car Noises

1. Squeaking During a Turn

Power steering is an automotive system that uses a steering fluid to provide additional power to navigate the vehicle in the desired direction. Unfortunately, this system degrades, causing small holes in the power lines that lead to a fluid leak. As a result, the steering system gets unresponsive and releases a high-pitched squeaking noise from the front of the car near the steering column. Consider pouring a low-cost stop leak additive to flush out debris and fill gaps. If the steering wheel remains firm, visit a car repair shop for a power steering replacement to avoid accidents.

2. Squealing Under the Hood

Starting a vehicle engine releases a satisfying purring sound from the vehicle. However, a high-pitched screeching noise under the hood can signify serpentine belt failure. This long rubber belt transports mechanical power from the engine accessories to the air conditioning compressor. As a result, the squealing noise can result in complete vehicle failure as the serpentine belt fails to transfer power to the car's engine and battery. Car repair experts recommend replacing serpentine belts every 4 to 6 years.

3. Metal Scraping Sounds

Most brake noises are normal as the brake pads within the caliper clamp against the rotors to bring the car to a stop. However, worn braking pads expose the metal calipers to grind to the steel rotors leading to grinding metal noise during braking. Replace the brake pads to avoid delay or failure of the braking system.
