When you think of wasps, you probably think of stinging insects with bright yellow bodies, long wings, and a very territorial nature. While these insects are certainly the most common varieties, there are other subspecies of wasp taking up residence in many Missouri homes.

Mahogany wasps are one such invasive species and are wreaking havoc in many yards across the state. At Collins Exterminating in Bolivar, Missouri, their wasp control team wants you to be able to recognize the species.

Do You Have a Mahogany Wasp Colony Around Your Home?

What Is a Mahogany Wasp?

Mahogany wasps are a type of paper wasp commonly found throughout the Midwest. Like other paper wasps, this species builds nests in trees, on porches, and just about any slightly exposed area. Like most wasps, the mahogany wasp requires water to survive and wood as a nesting material. What makes them different, though, is their unique reddish-brown body and dark black wings. Unlike yellowjackets and hornets, mahogany wasps lack the vibrant yellow accents on their exoskeletons, letting them blend in more easily on wooden surfaces and in gardens.

Wasp controlWhen Are They Active?

Most mahogany wasp colonies begin appearing in the early spring as the queen wakes up from winter hibernation. Once awake, she starts the process of building a nest, laying eggs, and growing the colony. Around midsummer, the colony is close to capacity and since more people are outside enjoying the weather, the frequency of stings increases. Given wasps need water within a mile of their colony, one form of wasp control could be to ensure there’s no standing water on your property.

Should You Remove Them?

It’s worth noting that these insects are considered beneficial for the environment. Though they’re aggressive, they pollinate many local plants and even aid in insect control around their colony, reducing caterpillar and cicada infestations. Barring having a family member allergic to the sting, it’s recommended leaving wasp nests alone. Should you opt for removal, though, it may be tempting to handle it by yourself. However, it’s best to work with a professional exterminator to reduce the risk of stings.
