Wild mice and other rodents love to enter homes. They could be searching for warmth, a place to nest, or smell food in the cabinets. Either way, living with unwanted rodents in the house is unpleasant, and below are several signs you may need to call an exterminator.

3 Clues There Are Mice in the Home

1. Mouse Droppings

One of the most apparent signs of mice is finding droppings in drawers or under furniture. These little creatures leave their droppings wherever they’ve been, and a common area to find them is in the kitchen. As they move around, they leave a trail of droppings. Look for a cluster of tiny brown specs—usually shaped like rice grains—in the corners of your utensil drawer or the cabinet under the sink. If you find them, call an exterminator.

2. Scratching Sounds

At first, you may think that it’s a tree branch hitting the side of the house, but mouse scratches come with low-pitched squeaking, especially if you put your ear to the wall and listen. Mice are nocturnal animals, which explains why you may be hearing the rustling at night.

3. Foul Odors

Depending on how large the infestation is, you may notice a foul odor around your home or in a particular room. If you notice a different smell, grab a flashlight, and inspect under heavy furniture and in cabinets. If you have cats or dogs, they may take an interest in a particular corner of your home that they normally wouldn’t. If this is the case, an exterminator can do a full inspection and remove any unwanted pests for you.
