Extreme weather and a pest infestation can weaken a tree’s foundation. As a result, many develop infections that may go unnoticed for a long time. Although this can be common, there are ways to save your yard from the effects of a sick tree. Here are a few signs and when to call a tree removal service.

How to Recognize a Sick Tree

1. Stinky Fluid

Bacterial wet wood may affect common species like maple, birch, and elms. It occurs when anaerobic bacteria that thrive in the low moisture areas enter a tree from its wounds. As a result, these microbes produce a slimy liquid and methane gas that can decay wood and increase the pressure inside the trunk. As the pressure builds up, it forces dark brown to black fluid to ooze out on cracks in the bark. Consider removing excess branches to promote rapid healing if you find a dark, smelly liquid oozing on the trunks. However, if wood decay persists, consider proper tree removal to prevent injuries caused by falling branches.

2. Peeling Bark

There are two main reasons why bark may peel off. First, the sudden temperature change can cause bark shedding and cracking because of stress. The other reason is a fungal infection caused by Hypoxylon. This fungus collects around the base and causes the bark to fall off. Inspect the area under the fallen bark to discover the cause of the peeling. If there is discoloration or growth, consider tree removal to avoid spreading fungal disease to other plants.

3. Brown Shelves

A parasitic fungal infection caused by Inonotus dryadeus produces light to dark brown shelves on the base of the trunk. Over time, this fungus may cause root and butt rot weakening the trunk foundation. Check for irregular growths on your trees. If you find velvety and light brown growths, consider tree removal to prevent them from falling unexpectedly.
