Although designed to closely resemble human hair, a synthetic hair replacement requires a different care regimen. Trying to maintain these fibers in the same manner as human hair will result in damage. Here's how to ensure your wig remains in excellent condition.

How to Care for Your Synthetic Hair Replacement

1. Detangle

When you receive your new hair replacement and before you wash it, take the time to thoroughly detangle it with a wide-tooth comb. Avoid using a standard brush, which can cause breakage.

Start at the bottom of the wig and move upward. This can be easier to accomplish by placing the piece on a wig stand or laying it on top of a paper towel roll or flat on a table.

2. Wash

It’s not necessary to wash the wig every day, but it’s important to wash it before wearing it for the first time. After that, once a week or every six to eight wearings should be enough.

To wash it, fill a sink with cold water and add about one tablespoon of shampoo specially formulated for synthetic wigs. Immerse the hair replacement in the water and gently agitate it and run your fingers over the cap. Then, rinse it under cold running water and blot—do not squeeze or wring—with a towel before gently rubbing conditioner through the hair portion only.

Finish by thoroughly rinsing under cold running water and placing it on the wig stand to air dry. Never use a hair dryer, as the heat can permanently damage the fibers. Also, avoid brushing or combing the wig while it's wet because this will stretch and stress the fibers.

3. Store

When you’re not wearing the wig, keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If you wear the piece regularly, the stand can be a sufficient storage spot. However, when it’s not being worn, it’s better to put it in the original box or a similar one and place it in a dark, well-ventilated closet.
