While most home chores can feel tedious, you'll be lucky if the only window repair you have to handle is a window cleaning from time to time. Window care is not to be overlooked. The steps you take to maintain your windows will help extend their longevity and keep them in good condition. To ensure your windows are gleaming and streak-free, use this guide to the do's and don'ts of maintaining glass widows.

Do:

Use distilled water.

Tap water is great for a lot of things. Unfortunately, cleaning windows is not one of them. The impurities and dissolved minerals are very apparent on the glass. Save yourself the frustration of a streaky mess and use distilled water for window washing.

Use vinegar.

Vinegar is a low-cost, natural cleaning ingredient that can work wonders on your windows and mirrors. If you are wary of cleaners with toxic ingredients, antibacterial distilled white vinegar is the green way to go. Add equal parts of distilled water and vinegar to a spray bottle and wipe your windows clean like you would with any other cleaning product.

Don't:

Go overboard with the soap.

Soapy suds are one of the biggest contributors to streaks. Too much soap creates a filmy overlay. When it comes to using soap, remember that a little goes a long way. For best results, mix 2 quarts of water, 2 quarts of rubbing alcohol and three drops of liquid dishwashing soap.

Use paper towels.

Paper towels, while convenient, not only leave streaks, but lint. For a much cleaner result, it's best to use a microfiber cloth or squeegee. If you have neither, you can utilize the traditional method of using newspaper. As long as you use the black and white pages and wear gloves, both your windows and your hands will be spotless.
