Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) are two popular roofing materials used for commercial buildings. While both offer similar benefits, they also have unique differences. If you’re currently debating between EPDM and TPO roofing, use the guide below to find out which better meets the needs of your business’s property.

TPO

TPO roofing is a single-ply membrane consisting of a reinforced, heat-weldable material. It’s known for its strong resistance to ozone, chemical exposure, microbial growth, and ultraviolet (UV) rays. For this reason, it’s a durable choice for an industrial or commercial application. It’s also highly flexible, so it’s ideal for a building with a low-sloped or complex roof.

TPO roofing

Unlike many other commercial products, TPO roofing is highly reflective. This feature helps control temperatures inside the building, reducing your HVAC system’s energy consumption. As a result, you can enjoy lower utility expenses.

A TPO roof also typically consists of recycled materials, which makes it an environmentally friendly choice. Many manufacturers offer a 25-year warranty for this type of surface, although this option can last up to 30 years if properly maintained.

EPDM

An EPDM surface is also a single-ply roofing membrane. However, this material consists of synthetic rubber. Its composition means it can last 50 years or more. This option is also known for its excellent weather resistance, making it popular for buildings in areas with harsh climates.

Like TPO, EPDM roofing is resistant to UV rays, ozone, and chemicals, which means it has a long life span and requires little maintenance. In contrast to its alternative, though, it gets applied differently. While a TPO surface is attached with glue or heat-welded, an EPDM membrane uses mechanical fasteners. For this reason, the latter is easier to install and repair, potentially reducing the related service costs.
