A healthy diet brimming with nutritious, wholesome food is not only good for your general health, but it can also have a positive impact on your oral one. On the other hand, a diet replete with certain foods will lead to cavities, as well as other dental issues. Here are a few ways your diet can impact oral health, and what you can do to prevent problems.

How Can Your Diet Cause Oral Health Issues?

1. Increase the Amount of Oral Bacteria

Sugary treats and sodas are a leading cause of tooth decay because oral bacteria actually feed on sugar, which then causes them to release acids. These acids are what cause cavities to form, which will become increasingly worse over time without dental treatment.

Foods with sugar should be enjoyed in limited amounts. When it comes to kids, be wary when serving juice, as many brands have lots of added sugar. Stick to water instead of sports drinks, and make sure you're brushing your teeth twice per day, while flossing before bed every night.

2. Cause Wear to Tooth Enamel

Citrus fruits are good for you, but they can cause dental problems since oranges, lemons, and other fruits also contain acids, which wear down tooth enamel. Even if eating citrus doesn't lead to a cavity, it can still increase oral sensitivity by wearing down tooth enamel.

Drink water after eating citrus to eliminate some of the acids in your mouth. Also, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. The combination of the acids and the scrubbing motion of your toothbrush can actually do more harm than good.

3. Contribute to Staining & Discoloration

Along with tooth decay and increased sensitivity, some foods can also hamper the appearance of your smile. Red wine, coffee, tea, soda, and dark-colored sauces are just a few of the items known to cause major stains on the enamel.

Certain beverages can be drunk with a straw, which limits contact with your teeth. Also, make sure you're keeping up with your twice-yearly dental cleanings for a bright, healthy smile. You can also ask your dentist about whitening treatment for a remarkable improvement in your smile.
