Whether it’s your first tooth filling ever or your first one in a while, it’s natural to be nervous about the upcoming procedure. Thankfully, you can eliminate much of this fear just by knowing what to expect. Here’s how the average dentist handles tooth fillings in the modern age.

Identifying Cavities

Because decay isn't always visible to the naked eye, dentists must take x-rays to determine its extent. As such, your dental team will either review the X-rays from your last appointment (if it was recent) or take new ones before proceeding. This will allow them to confirm the location and severity of each cavity so they can devise the best approach for combatting them.

Eliminating Decay

To reduce discomfort during the procedure, your dentist will start by administering an anesthetic. Whereas local anesthesia, like lidocaine, will suffice, especially nervous patients may request some form of sedation, as well.

Once everything is numb, the provider will use a gentle drill to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

Once the tooth has been cleaned thoroughly, your dentist will apply the filling. Several materials can be used to fill cavities, including metal, ceramic, composite resin, and glass ionomer. Each has unique advantages, which your provider will explain in detail so you can choose the best material for the job. After setting the filling, which may require a UV light, you’ll be free to go.

Preserving Fillings

Fillings can last for anywhere from five to 20 years, depending on the material used, its location in the mouth, and your chewing/clenching/grinding habits. To extend the lifetime of each filling, practice good oral hygiene habits. In addition to brushing and flossing, for example, avoid using your teeth as tools or chewing on hard items like ice and pen caps.
