Even if you brush diligently using all the right tools—a soft-bristled brush, for example, and a toothpaste that contains fluoride—you can’t skip flossing. Dental floss allows you to scrape plaque from between the teeth, where even the most advanced brushes can’t reach. Dentists recognize that using floss doesn't come easy for everyone, though. Thankfully, there are a few alternatives that can effectively remove plaque as well as traditional waxed thread.

3 Popular Alternatives to Dental Floss

1. Floss Picks

Floss picks, which can be disposable or reusable, contain a short piece of floss strung tightly between two plastic prongs. As such, they essentially serve as a handle for traditional dental floss. Some varieties also have a built-in toothpick on the bottom of the handle, which you can use to dislodge large food particles from between the teeth.

2. Interdental Brushes

dentistComprised of a short handle and a thin flossing head with bristles, interdental brushes are easy to maneuver in tight spaces, especially for those with joint or mobility issues. Much like toothbrushes, they can be used over and over again, thereby offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional floss and disposable picks. Once the bristles start fraying, though, you’ll have to replace your interdental brush or its head for optimal oral health.

3. Water Flossers

Water flossers—or what dentists often call water picks—clean the teeth using a thin stream of water. When squirted at a fairly high pressure, the stream is powerful enough to rinse away plaque. These devices are especially helpful for those whose teeth are so close together that threading floss between them is difficult.
