If you want to install a natural stone countertop, you’ll have to decide how thick to cut the material. This measurement will depend on a variety of factors, including material, placement, and design. Use this guide to get a general idea of how thick your countertops should be.

What Are the Standard Thicknesses?

Quartz and granite are typically available in a thickness of one, two, or three centimeters. Three centimeters is an ideal measurement because it offers the most durability, size flexibility, and color selection. Additionally, this thickness usually doesn’t require support unless the overhang is more than 16 inches or the material weighs over 15 pounds per square foot.

Smaller thicknesses are commonly available for prefabricated materials because they have a laminated edge that’s glued to the bottom of the slab, making it appear thicker. Thinner materials are weaker, requiring plywood, cement boards, or medium-density fiberboard for support. The laminated edge is used to cover these materials.

How to Choose the Right Thickness?

countertopsGranite countertops are only available in two and three centimeters of thickness while quartz is available in all main sizes. If you don’t want to deal with support, laminated materials, or extra construction work, opt for three centimeters.

Some homeowners stack two three-centimeter slabs to create an extra-thick, eye-catching look. However, this option requires plywood support to accommodate the weight and protect your cabinetry. The material would also have to be laminated together. If you want to have slabs that are more than three-centimeters thick, put them over smaller areas, such as individual bathroom vanities or two-seater kitchen islands, to prevent stressing objects with the weight.
