School is just around the corner again, and you probably already have a long list of things to get done. But among all the school supplies, the new wardrobe, and the busy schedule ahead, one thing you should add to that checklist is a multipoint tire inspection. If you want the safest and best performance your vehicle can offer for all those upcoming school activities, here are some of the reasons you need to take care of your tires first.

Why Should I Get a Tire Inspection Before the Kids Head Back to School?

1. Better Gas Mileage

Always make sure your tires are inflated properly. For most vehicles, tire pressure should be between 33 and 36 PSI (pounds per square inch), and the tire's recommended pressure can typically be found on the driver's side door. With correct pressure, the treads hit the road in the most efficient way possible, which reduces how much gas you need and protects your car from blowouts and other safety hazards on the road.

2. Safer Driving in Bad Weather

Tires are designed to move water out of the way to keep you from hydroplaning on wet surfaces. If your treads are too worn, you'll have a tougher time driving through bad weather. To check your tread, place a penny between the grooves of the tire with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can still see the top of Lincoln's head, it’s time for new tires.

Fall and winter weather may also bring ice and snow. If you’re using tires designed for warm weather only, you may want to invest in all-weather or winter tires. These tires are durable enough to hold up in some of the toughest conditions to keep your family safe.

3. Blowout Prevention

Your tires may have picked up a nail, a splinter, or a screw without even knowing it. If these holes aren’t addressed in time, your tire may pop while driving. Bulges, where the tire’s wall is compromised, could cause a blowout as well. Do a thorough visual tire inspection for debris in the treads and bulges in the sidewalls before the start of the season. Tread damage can often be repaired, but damaged sidewalls will require tire replacement.

4. Increased Tire Life

Wheel alignments and tire rotations help keep your tires from wearing unevenly, allowing you to drive more miles before you need new tires. If your tires aren’t worn the same all the way across the tread, they’ll likely need an alignment. With front-wheel-drive cars, the front tires often use up tread more quickly than the rear. A simple tire rotation every 3,000 to 5,000 miles will help even out the wear.
