You rely on your vehicle to go everywhere from work to weekend road trips, so it needs to be maintained to run reliably. One of the most important components is the drive belt or serpentine belt. It powers several systems, including the air conditioning, power steering, alternator, and water pump. Like any car part, it will eventually need to be replaced. Here’s how to know it’s time to visit your auto center for a new belt.

What Are the Signs That You Need a New Drive Belt?

1. Wear & Tear

Visually inspect the belt from time to time. Check for cracks, tears, rib separation, missing pieces, or uneven or damaged ribs. If you notice any of these problems, take the car to an auto center for repairs as soon as possible. This prevents costly and potentially dangerous issues like slips, snaps, misalignment, or fluid contamination.

2. Overheating

3. Steering & AC Issues

If the air conditioner and power steering stop working, a severed belt may be the culprit because the belt powers these systems. Non-working power steering is a safety issue because it may cause the vehicle to stop abruptly. Have the belt replaced immediately when this occurs.

4. Odd Noises

Odd noises, such as squealing, is the most obvious warning sign that you need a belt inspection. Sometimes, squealing is a result of water on the belt. If you hear squealing only when driving in the rain, it may be nothing to worry about. However, squealing can also be caused by a misaligned belt making contact with the pulleys or spilled motor oil. These issues are significant and should be addressed immediately.
