Sodium lauryl sulfate is a common toothpaste ingredient. Also called SLS, sodium dodecyl sulfate, or sodium laurel sulfate, it can be produced from organic or synthetic sources. Because it’s used in a wide range of cleaning supplies and not just personal care products, some patients have expressed concern to their dentists that it might have unintended health effects. Here's what you should know about this toothpaste additive.

What Does SLS Do?

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent, meaning that it loosens food and plaque from your teeth. It’s also the main ingredient that makes toothpaste foam up as you brush. As a side effect, it can also temporarily change your taste buds’ sensitivity to sweetness and bitterness—it’s the ingredient that makes sweet food or beverages like orange juice taste different when you’ve just brushed your teeth.

What Are the Benefits of SLS?

This ingredient greatly improves a toothpaste formula’s effectiveness at cleaning teeth, which is essential for preventive dental care. Its foaminess spreads it around your mouth and breaks up plaque, and it even has some antibacterial properties.

When you brush your teeth regularly with a toothpaste containing SLS, your dentist is less likely to find any cavities in your mouth. Your plaque gets broken up effectively, reducing the likelihood of tartar forming on your teeth and leading to gum disease. This detergent also lifts stains from your enamel to keep your teeth whiter.

Should You Use It?

SLS has been declared safe by a wide range of agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In most cases, SLS is beneficial and dentists also recommend using it.

However, there are two exceptions. First, if you have mouth sores, SLS can cause irritation, so a milder toothpaste without this additive is a healthier choice. Second, if you have an allergy or sensitivity to this ingredient, choosing non-SLS products will help you avoid reactions.
