Toothaches develop for many reasons and range in severity, and while it's crucial to see a dentist, they may not be immediately available. Fortunately, there are many ways to manage the symptoms at home. Use the following guide to stay comfortable until you can book a dental appointment.

How to Handle Tooth Pain at Home

1. Apply a Garlic Paste

Raw garlic cloves contain a powerful compound called allicin. It naturally combats the decay-causing bacteria that create tooth pain and can be applied directly onto the affected area.

Crush a fresh clove and combine it with salt to create a paste. Wash your hands, and then rub the mixture on and around the tooth for pain relief. If you don’t have garlic, onions are a substitute with the same antibacterial qualities.

2. Use a Cold Compress

Cold temperatures will numb the pain and reduce swelling and inflammation around the affected tooth, so use a cold compress or ice pack. If you don’t have either, wrap ice cubes in a clean cloth. Hold the compress to your cheek for 15 minutes and then remove for 15—repeat as needed.

Be mindful of tooth sensitivity to the chilling sensation. If the protective enamel is worn, or if the tooth is chipped, the exposed nerve may be sensitive to the cold temperature.

3. Swish Hydrogen Peroxide

Use hydrogen peroxide to neutralize harmful bacteria causing the toothache. Purchase 3% peroxide and mix it with equal parts of water. Swish it for 30 seconds, then spit it out. This substance can be dangerous when swallowed, so don’t offer it to children.

3. Salt Water Rinse

Mix one teaspoon of salt and four ounces of warm water. Swish it for 30 seconds, then spit it out.

You should still have a dentist check the tooth, even if the pain subsides. If you need to book an appointment, turn to Preventive Dental Services PC, in Alaska.
