People who see their dentist regularly are already maintaining a good oral health routine, but even those who are mindful about their dental health can have a few bad habits worth breaking. To better your chances of avoiding the need for crowns, teeth whitening, root canal, or other dental procedures, pay attention to the following.

Oral Hygiene Habits Worth Breaking

1. Only Brushing in the Morning

Brushing in the morning is routine for most people, in part because it helps eliminate morning breath, but evening brushing is much easier to forget. You may be tired, you might get distracted, or you just may not realize how important it is. Whatever your reason, understand that brushing in the evening before bed can help remove food debris and bacteria that can fester overnight, leading to oral health issues over time.

2. Not Flossing, or Flossing Poorly

Flossing is an essential part of keeping your teeth free of plaque because it can reach areas your brush can't. Flossing can help reduce bad breath, too, though its most important function is removing material from in between your teeth. When you floss, wrap it around the side of your teeth rather than just pushing it up and down. This will ensure you get a thorough, complete cleaning.

3. Brushing Too Aggressively

Even those who brush regularly can succumb to this bad habit. Scrubbing harder will not give you a deeper cleaning. All this will do is wear out your toothbrush faster, abrade your tooth enamel, and make your gums more sensitive. Instead, use a softer touch and ensure you reach all areas of your teeth. Even better, invest in an electric toothbrush with a pressure indicator.

4. Buying Just Any Toothpaste

Avoid buying a brand of toothpaste just because it's on sale, because not all toothpaste is alike. First, ensure it has an American Dental Association (ADA) seal on it certifying that it has been tested and meets the ADA's standards for oral health. Also, ask your dentist about which type of toothpaste is right for your specific needs, since some are designed for sensitive teeth and gums, others to combat gingivitis, and more. A switch could improve your oral hygiene.
