The rich appearance and durability of hardwood floors make the material a popular pick for residential and commercial spaces. Although proper upkeep will extend the lifespan of the investment, it’s not uncommon to notice dried stains from dirty shoes, pet accidents, or the occasional beverage spill. Luckily, there are a few simple tricks to remove stubborn stains without replacing the affected floorboards.

What Stain Removal Methods Should Be Used on Hardwood Floors?

Soak the Stain in a Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

hardwood-floorsIf the stain has soaked through the hardwood floor finish and into the grain, try using a hydrogen peroxide solution to remove the blemish. First, saturate a cotton rag or towel with the liquid. Place the damp cloth directly on the stain, allowing enough time for the liquid to soak into the surface. After, wipe up any excess hydrogen peroxide and let the floor air-dry. The solution should bleach the pigment to fade the stain or remove traces of it entirely.

Rub the Stain With Steel Wool

If using hydrogen peroxide doesn’t remove the stain, try rubbing it with a steel wool pad and wax or sandpaper. This strategy works best on hardwood floors already coated in wax or treated with penetrating stains, as the abrasive materials can help break down the protective layers to access the stain. To keep the floor from looking dull, reseal and buff it after removing the stain.

Use Lye-Based Cleaners to Remove Grease Stains

If stains are caused by grease-based materials, try using cleaning products that feature lye as an active ingredient. The chemical can cut through oils to help extract the stain. Rub kitchen soap that contains lye directly on the stain. Continue to gently rub the surface until the mark is removed. To prevent damaging the floor, make sure the surface is completely dry before walking over or placing furniture on top of it.
