When you're pregnant, there are many vitamins to take, doctor's appointments to make, and wellness tips to follow, but foot health isn't always on that list. However, with the added weight from pregnancy, there can be increased or unfamiliar pain, swelling, and discomfort in your feet. Luckily, there are several ways to keep foot problems out of the equation during pregnancy.

How to Avoid Foot Problems During Pregnancy

1. Buy New Socks and Shoes

When your feet swell during pregnancy, they will likely do so to such an extent that you need bigger shoes and socks. Buying a half or full size larger of both of these items will help make your feet more comfortable in the event of swelling. You might also try buying thicker socks, which will help mitigate any foot problems by providing cushioning and protection.

2. Exercise the Feet

Before pregnancy or during the early stages, it's best to stretch and exercise your feet, which will build and strengthen crucial muscles that will help mitigate foot problems and provide comfort and support. You can point and flex your toes while lying or sitting down. Alternatively, you can stand on one foot for minutes at a time, switching back and forth, so that each foot has equal attention.

3. Move Around

In the later stages of pregnancy, it's important not to remain too stagnant unless recommended by your doctor. Proper blood flow, which can occur during walking or yoga, will help reduce swelling and mitigate foot problems. Even small movements can help, especially if exercise feels too strenuous.
