If you’ve ever had an ingrown toenail, you know just how painful they can be. The swelling and irritation as the nail digs into your skin can cause discomfort with each step. Fortunately, you can take simple, important steps to reduce your chances of getting an ingrown toenail.

How to Prevent Ingrown Toenails

1. Buy Bigger Shoes

Ill-fitting footwear compresses the toes and causes the nail to grow into the skin. If you have children, it can be hard to keep up with their growing feet, but check their shoes regularly to ensure they have plenty of room in the toe. If you find that your toes are hitting the ends of your shoes, size up for comfort. Runners should get measured for the right fit and consider going up half a size.

2. Protect Your Feet

Wear proper footwear during athletic activities and consider wearing shoes around the house if you find yourself stubbing your toes frequently.

3. Trim Nail Carefully

Trim your nails straight across rather than in a rounded shape. Rounded nails are more likely to grow back ingrown. Also avoid cutting your nails too short, leaving a sliver of nail above the bed. Toenails that are trimmed below the nailbed can more easily grow into the skin.
