While the advent of the internet has made your life easier in countless ways, there are still some tasks that have been hard to find virtual alternatives for. Take the signature, for example; unless you have a tablet and a stylus, it’s nearly impossible to recreate your signature on a computer with a mouse or track pad. However, if you have a Mac® computer, this doesn’t have to be a challenge any longer. Use the following step-by-step guide to sign documents using the “Preview” application.

How to Sign Documents Realistically on Your Mac Computer

1. Getting Started

Find the “Preview” app in your computer’s “Application” folder, and open it up. Then, find a blank sheet of white, unlined paper, and sign your name in dark blue or black ink. This is crucial for the visibility of your signature in the following steps.

2. Capturing Your Signature

Click on “Signatures” and then “Add Signature,” which can be found at the bottom of the list that pops up. Put your signed piece of paper on top of a stack of other blank sheets, and hold the stack up in front of your webcam. Make sure the signature is in front of the lens, and click “Accept.” Now, your computer has created an image of your genuine signature for future use.

3. Adding Your Signature to Documents

To insert your official signature into your job applications, tax forms, and leases, click “Show Edit Toolbar” in “Preview.” Then, you can either search for the “Signature” tool in the Edit toolbar or select “Tools,” “Annotate,” and “Signature.” On the virtual document, create an appropriate-sized box for your signature by clicking and dragging.

In addition to eliminating the whole printing, signing, scanning, and emailing process, Mac computers make it easy to sign documents with a few clicks.
